THE CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS HAS CLOSED. We will contact the submitters of papers, panels, roundtables and workshops as soon as possible with outcomes of our reviews.
Formats
We encourage proposals in four types of session formats:
Organised panels and individual papers
Panels will be structured in the traditional manner of individual paper presentations. This will be four (4) presentations of 15 minutes back-to-back, followed by a 30-minute discussion on the presentations. All organised panels are thus 90 minutes. The panels will be organized in a hybrid (i.e., including online participants) format, meaning paper presenters can present from home. Discussions will be organized using chat-moderators.
Roundtables
Roundtables of 90 minutes in which no more than five people discuss a particular theme or issue in front of (and subsequently with) an audience. While a roundtable may include short (approx. 5 min) contributions/presentations, the main idea is to create a lively debate, and not to focus on any one or multiple presenter(s). To be able to create such debate, roundtables will not be organized in a hybrid (i.e., including online participants) format.
Workshops
Workshops of 90 minutes are characterised by experimentation, collaboration, interaction and/or improvisation. The aim of workshops is to organise collective activities that are open-ended and cultivate possibilities for surprise, novelty, and learning. Workshops will be designed as interactive, reflexive sessions that prioritise exploration, rather than the discussion of already established research results. To make true collaboration possible and create safe space, the maximum number of persons per workshop is 16 (including workshop convenors). The workshops will not be organized in a hybrid (i.e., including online participants) format.
Other
Besides papers, panels, roundtables, and workshops, we welcome scholars and practitioners to share ideas for other conference formats with us. If you would like to suggest a different format and/or are willing to run a session or activity in a different format, please fill out the form below and send it to us via email (DDD17@uu.nl). The DDD17 selection committee will then decide if and how we can accommodate your idea.
Call for papers and panels
Please submit your proposal here:
Individual paper
An individual paper presentation of 15 minutes that, if accepted, will be grouped into a panel with three other individual papers by the DDD17 selection committee. Please note that the committee will do its utmost to gather papers with the same theme or in the same field together in a panel, but that this might prove difficult sometimes.
All proposals must consist of:
- title (and subtitle, if wanted) of paper;
- a short description of no more than 300 characters;
- a longer abstract of no more than 250 words (please avoid the inclusion of diacritics or non-Roman characters as much as possible);
- names and details of all presenters.
After submitting your proposal, a notification email will be sent to your email address informing you that the proposal has been successfully submitted. Please contact the DDD17 selection committee at ddd17@uu.nl in case you have not received this notification email (please check your spam folder as well before contacting us).
Organised panel
A full organised panel proposal submitted by at least two convenors. The time slot for an organised panel is 90 minutes. The organised panel should consist of a chair, discussant (optional) and 4 presenters. If you include fewer presenters, the DDD17 selection committee may decide to add additional presenters.
Please make sure that you have gathered the details of all convenors and presenters (including paper abstracts and personal details for each presenter) before you start filling in the form. As a convenor, you are responsible for communicating with the presenters in your panel; see “convenor responsibilities” at the bottom of this page.
If you would like to submit multiple organised panels, please submit a separate form for each panel. The titles of the panels can be the same, but please number them separately (e.g., Cemeteries in Europe I, Cemeteries in Europe II). You are permitted to submit a maximum of three organised panels with the same panel title. Please be advised that the DDD17 selection committee has the right to decide which panels to include and which to exclude.
Submitting a organised panel is a two-step process:
- First, submit all four individual paper proposals, one-by-one, using the link in the box above (“Individual paper”). You can choose to do this yourself, as convenor, or to have the paper presenters in your panel do this. After submission, you will receive a reference number for each proposed paper.
- Second, submit your organised panel proposal. This proposal must consist of:
- title (and subtitle, if wanted) of the panel;
- a short description of the panel no more than 500 characters;
- a longer abstract of the panel no more than 400 words (please avoid the inclusion of diacritics or non-Roman characters as much as possible);
- names and details of at least two convenors;
- titles (and subtitles, if wanted), reference numbers, and author details of the individual papers allocated to the organised panel.
After submitting your proposal, a notification email will be sent to your email address informing you that the proposal has been successfully submitted. Please contact the DDD17 selection committee at ddd17@uu.nl in case you have not received this notification email (please check your spam folder as well before contacting us).
Roundtable
A full roundtable proposal focused on discussion (no paper presentations), submitted by at least two convenors. Ideally, the participants briefly (approx. 5 minutes) present their take on a theme or issue and discuss it among themselves and with the audience. The timeslot for a roundtable is 90 minutes. The roundtable format provides more time for debate than a panel in which papers are presented. Please note that roundtables will not be organized in a hybrid (including online participants) format.
We only accept complete roundtable proposals. Convenors of organised roundtables are responsible for submitting a full roundtable proposal (roundtable title, participant details etc.). They are also required to include the contact details of each of the participants. As a convenor, you are also responsible for communicating with the participants in your roundtable; see “convenor responsibilities” at the bottom of this page.
All roundtable proposals must consist of:
- title (and subtitle, if wanted) of roundtable;
- a short description of no more than 500 characters;
- a longer abstract of no more than 400 words (please avoid the inclusion of diacritics or non-Roman characters as much as possible);
- names and details of all convenors and participants to the roundtable.
After submitting your proposal, a notification email will be sent to your email address informing you that the proposal has been successfully submitted. Please contact the DDD17 selection committee at ddd17@uu.nl in case you have not received this notification email (please check your spam folder as well before contacting us).
Workshop
A full workshop proposal focused on an innovative idea or format, submitted by at least two convenors. The timeslot for a roundtable is 90 minutes. We are open to suggestions for workshops, both methodological and hands‐on/practical. The DDD17 selection committee will get in touch about your suggestion after the review process. Please note that workshops will not be organised in a hybrid (including online participants) format and can hold a maximum of 16 people (including workshop convenors).
As a convenor, you are responsible for communicating with the participants in your workshop; see “convenor responsibilities” at the bottom of this page.
All proposals must consist of:
- title (and subtitle, if wanted) of workshop;
- a short description of no more than 500 characters;
- a longer abstract of no more than 400 words (please avoid the inclusion of diacritics or non-Roman characters as much as possible);
- names and details of all convenors and participants to the workshop.
After submitting your proposal, a notification email will be sent to your email address informing you that the proposal has been successfully submitted. Please contact the DDD17 selection committee at ddd17@uu.nl in case you have not received this notification email (please check your spam folder as well before contacting us).
Rules
The following “rules” apply to all participants who would like to contribute to the conference, in either of the above-mentioned formats:
- Applicants are only allowed to submit one individual paper proposal as first author. It is not permitted to submit two or more abstracts. If more abstracts are submitted per person, the DDD17 selection committee will decide which abstract to include and which to exclude.
- All sessions (panels, roundtables, and workshops) must have at least two convenors, so as to avoid cancellations if one convenor cannot attend the event.
- All those attending the conference (i.e., all presenters, convenors, and participants) will need to register to the DDD17 conference and pay to attend.
- The DDD17 selection committee will decide which paper, panel, roundtable, and workshop proposals to accept. Their decision will be binding.
Convenor responsibilities
It is the convenors’ responsibility to ensure that all session participants are well briefed, and that organised panels, roundtables and workshops meet DDD17 requirements. To that end, convenors should communicate decisions about proposals to their sessions, and email participants to inform them of speaking order and how much time they are allocated, remind them to register to attend the conference, notify them of any possible changes, and give any additional information related to the session. If participants withdraw, convenors should notify the DDD17 selection committee as soon as possible.
